The Illness of Our Age: Anxiety
Recently increasing number of people talking about the word anxiety, that they think they have. So, what exactly is anxiety? ASA (American Psychological Association) defines anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure. In fact, anxiety is something that everyone has. But anxiety disorder is not something that everyone has.
Especially the Covid19 pandemic, has started to make our already stressful lives even more stressful. Although there was a decrease in our stress and anxiety levels after the vaccine was found, these did not disappear completely. Whether we are a student, or an adult, stress and anxiety are a part of our lives. Our thought that if we start career life during our student years, we will be comfortable, when we start career, it is replaced by the thought that we will relax when we retire. In fact, perhaps the issue we should focus on is not to eliminate the anxiety or stress in our lives, but to learn how to deal with them and to continue our lives without letting them dominate our lives.
Let’s talk with you today about things that will reduce our stress, and anxiety disorder to a minimum, if not eliminate them. Before moving on to these, it is worth mentioning that what I will suggest here will not be as effective medical methods as the information that a psychologist or psychiatrist will provide you.
Getting Help from Experts
First of all, if the anxieties you experience make it difficult for you to continue with your life, if you are avoiding things that you think will cause you anxiety, it is useful to talk to a psychologist or psychiatrist about the anxiety you are experiencing. Just hearing about anxiety disorder on social media without a diagnosis does not mean that you also have this disease. So, my first suggestion to you is to talk to a doctor about your experiences.
Start a Hobby
Finding distractions about a topic that interests you can help reduce your anxiety. You can learn to paint, play an instrument, or learn a new foreign language. Remember, our goal here is not to paint the best or be the best musician, our goal is to keep ourselves busy and not let our anxiety take over.
Do Exercise
Even if we find it very difficult to play sports, and we try to make it a habit, maybe all we have to do is go out and get some fresh air when we are worried. So don’t take my suggestion to do sports as a professional athlete or to exercise for hours every day. Since we move while doing sports, our brain produces endorphins in this way. This hormone also helps to reduce stress levels and relaxes the person. Come on then, what are you waiting for? Grab your sneakers, we’re going for a run.
Listen to Music
Is there a situation in this life where listening to music is not good for us? Music is our first refuge in almost everything. Listening to music when we are anxious and stressed helps to reduce our stress and sadness. Sometimes the lilts that we open while coping with stress sometimes leave their place to slow songs. So, let’s put on our headphones and immerse ourselves in music therapy.
Reading Book
Do not perceive this suggestion as just reading personal development books. I think these books are not very good for us, especially when we are anxious and stressed. It may be better for you to read novels and science fiction books instead. Although it is difficult at first to focus on the book when our stress level is at its highest, we will let ourselves be left with the miraculous power of reading in the following pages.
Talking to Your Family and/or Close Friends
Our relatives may not see or feel the stress we experience. Therefore, instead of burdening yourself with the stress and anxiety, let your family and friends help you with this.
Keep Your Distance with Social Media
It’s not a very good idea to look at social media when we’re anxious. A photo we see on social media creates a false impression in our minds that we are the only ones experiencing anxiety. However, every person feels anxiety but does not prefer to show it on social media. Do you consider posting a beautiful photo of yourself on social media while you are anxious?
